about

This new solo EP presents Haumea Sonifikationen (2018) for electric guitar and electronics by Matthias Ockert.

Haumea Sonifikationen is a composition based on scientific data from light curves of the astronomical object Haumea. It is located beyond Neptune in the Kuiper Belt and is named after the Hawaiian fertility goddess. The light curves of this very cold and low-light object come from observations of the Herschel Space Telescope.
From the data I have created musical material for electronics and electric guitar, which makes the light curves audible as a sonic shapes. I interpreted the light intensity course as envelopes and proportions for volume, room positions, filters, delays and as a waveform for sound synthesis. In addition, I derived rhythms, tempo relationships, dynamics, pitches, timbre and dissonance degrees for chord progressions.
The composition is as well a written out score, as an interactive played computer program in MAX/MSP, which generates sounds from synthetic models and from live guitar samples recorded based on the light data. Together with a modular notation for the electric guitar, it forms the basis for an improvisational interaction between human and astronomical data. The five parts of the composition are variants of the tonal shape of the light curves of their own musical character, inspired by terms describing astrophysical phenomena.

The composition was commissioned by KlangForum Heidelberg e.V. in 2018, funded by Klaus Tschira Stiftung and Projekt TOR4 der BASF SE. It was world premiered 11/2018 at Haus der Astronomie Heidelberg in the concert series "Sternbild: Mensch“ of KlangForum Heidelberg, conducted by Walter Nußbaum, with visualisations by Dr. Markus Pössel.

Haumea Sonifikationen is based on light curve data from the observation of transneptunial objects through the Herschel Space Telescope, provided by Max-Planck-Institut Deutschland in cooperation with Dr. Miriam Rengel.
